Is the Gaylord Opryland Hotel worth the hype? - February 26, 2010

The Gaylord Opryland Hotel is an amazing place that I think everyone should visit at least once. It is huge with three indoor gardens that total 9 acres, more then 2,800 rooms, a spa, restaurants, bars and clubs and shops of all kinds.

I feel like when you go in to have a look around you must keep the heart of a child during the time of your visit. I say that because when walking around gardens, walking under waterfalls, amongst the trees and flowers it is very easy to imagine a fairy riding on a leaf in the fountain, as if it were a boat. It makes you want to sit on a bench with that special someone and soak up all the joy, smiles and delight that being in a magical place brings. Holding hands seems like the only thing to do and not to just walk from place to place and ignore all the incredible surroundings.

Those are some of the reasons that I love this hotel and feel like everyone should visit at least once. I say that because of having my own heart swept away there as the magic of the place and two people walking through garden after garden caused our hearts to melt and become one.

The hotel has a large convention within the hotel and they bring many conventions to our city and those people often get out to see the city. So the hotel is an attraction that helps the local economy but also many of the people who stay there get out and about in Nashville so they aren't bringing their money solely to Opryland.

Some of the rooms are absolutely mind blowing in sheer size, opulence and style but many of the rooms are pretty basic and they still like to charge a very pretty penny for them. To many of the rooms are just not worth the price that they have on them and I would recommend staying at a smaller hotel that is more in tune with the guests and take the time to visit the Opryland Hotel on your own time. Another thing that I don't really care for is the way they charge so much for self and valet parking, so to get around that park over at the Opry Mills mall and walk over to the Delta entrance of the hotel.

I do think you should give them a try at least once. It is a fun place to stay at for a night or two but it can be just to much for many people because of it's size and all. My recommendation is to stay somewhere else after you have spent a night or two there. It is truly a wonderful experience but you can save money and still enjoy the gardens, restaurants, bars and shopping without the big prices or the hassle of trying to find your room.

So yes, I love this hotel and company but it isn't the only place in Nashville so do some research and find out what fits you best when you visit Nashville. Some things aren't perfect but a perfect part of a city and that is the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. It is a place that you have to see and experience for yourself.

To answer the question that is the headline, "yes it is worth the hype," overall.

Family Friendly Nashville - February 23, 2010

What to do when you are visiting Nashville and you have kids? Well, you can't really take them honky-tonkin', clubbing or do anything to wild and crazy but there are still plenty of things to do and enjoy in Nashville without having to cover the eyes and ears of your children.

Why not take them to any of the places listed below and I promise that both the parents and the children will have a wonderful time. See you out and about in Nashville.

What are the top 5 places that showcase Nashville to visitors? - February 22, 2010

I posted this question a few days ago to see what some of the local Nashvillians would say and what they believe gives people a good idea of the top 5 places or things to visit in Nashville.

Here are some responses...

nashvilleexperience.jpg

Jan - my choices (for visitors) would be - Ryman Auditorium, State Capitol, Lower Broad, Country Music Hall of Fame and the Opryland Hotel. Great question!

Rebecca Michelle - Centennial Park, Gaylord Opryland Hotel, 2nd Ave/Broadway, all the country music attractions, and The Hermitage.

Jason - If I could only take a visitor to 5 places: The first is more of an "area":
1) Bicentennial Mall State Park (Capitol Hill/Farmers Market/Germantown) when it's nice out is my favorite wandering place with visitors.
2) Rainy day? The Frist
3) Music Listening - Sunday nights @ 3rd & Lindsley (unless Mike Farris is singing with the McCrary Sisters ... See More at Station Inn)
4) Music History - The Ryman
5) Any number of locally owned restaurants, but let's say Pancake Pantry. The line out the door, whether because of the food (or the hype), is a great place to hang out and enjoy good company.

Dinner at Macke's Green Hills - February 20, 2010

I'm going to visit Macke's Green Hills restaurant soon to meet chef Toby Willis and try some of their delicious food. Visiting a new (for me) restaurant is always a great pleasure especially when they have a chef that enjoys what he does and believes in creating an experience not just a meal.

I love what he did with a couple of desserts that are fun and a bit adventurous. He did his own version of a Moon Pie which was served with a milk gelato and an ice-cold shot of RC Cola or the apple fritter bread pudding (fritters from the Donut Den) with a cider sorbet & buttermilk creme Anglaise.

Now to visit a place like this I need to find someone who enjoys the adventure of tasting whatever the chef suggests and letting your tastebuds be tantalized with the pleasure of great food.

I think the person I take should give me their best "Nashville Experience" from a locally owned restaurant. I look forward to reading your stories and visiting Macke's.

Visit their website to learn more about them and to have a look at the menu. http://www.mackesgreenhills.com/

Interview with Chef Joe Shaw - February 19, 2010

My interview with Chef Joe Shaw when he was still the Chef at The Standard at the Smith House in Nashville. He has since moved on to Miro District in Nashville and turned that restaurant into a destination restaurant, just like he did at The Watermark and The Standard. Chef Joe worked with Chef Frank Stitt in Birmingham and moved on to become a legend of his own.

Chef Joe Shaw is a chef that specializes in Southern foods that are upscale and yet simple at the same time. Whenever and wherever you have the chance to eat some of his food, please do so because you will not regret it.

Celebrity sightings in Nashville - part 1 - February 18, 2010

People have asked me for years "where can we go and see some celebrities?" I always tell them, that if you go looking for them, you will never see them. If you are just out and about shopping, eating or just doing the normal things in life, you might actually bump into a celebrity one day. It is kind of fun to look over and see a celebrity having lunch just a few feet away from you or having some coffee at Starbucks. As much fun as it is the big difference between Nashville and anywhere else that celebrities sometimes go and are seen out and about is that we don't bug or harass them. We don't have, want or need any stupid papperazi chasing them around filming or taking their pictures. We love having them around here and we let them have as normal a life as possible. That is what they enjoy as well because it usually is the one place they get a reprieve from the madness of the celebrity world.

Through the years I've met, hung out with and just saw celebrities here and there around Nashville. Once of my favorites was years ago, maybe early '90's and I was at the Opryland Hotel. The band Bon Jovi was there because they were going to play a concert in Nashville or something. We all got word that they were coming out the main door of the hotel and the limo was waiting but we weren't supposed to let anyone know who was coming out or when or anything at all.

Well of course word got out and there suddenly fans swarming the front door to see the band as they came out. After so many of them overwhelmed the front drive, the band decided to go out the Magnolia Lobby entrance. So the limo leaves and the band waits for the right moment because at this point they weren't where the public could see them. Once the limo arrived at the Magnolia entrance and after again no one was supposed to let the fans know where they were leaving from, word got out.

Suddenly the masses at the other door swarmed upon the Magnolia entrance and finally security and different ones held the crowd back as the band came through the Magnolia lobby, out the door, through the screaming fans and slipped into the limo and away they went.

The funny part is even though everyone wanted an autograph, a picture, to touch them or whatever...they were just thrilled to have seen them just a few feet away.

It was a lot of fun and it truly was a "rock and roll" moment. It sure was fun to watch and be in the middle of it all.

The new leader in Nashville entertainment and information - February 18, 2010

The Nashville Experience with Corey Webb website is coming and will be a combination of entertainment and information. We've heard so many times how people can't find good information when planning a trip to Nashville. The info the find is either practically a commercial for the business or place or usually it's so vague you don't get any information that can be useful.

Nashville Experience-cropped-top

We want you to be able to visit The Nashville Experience and find information that you can trust to help with your planning of a trip. We will have videos and all sorts of things that will be entertaining and providing a fun look in and around the city.

For to long now we've heard the voices of people crying out for a leader to show them what Nashville is truly about. We finally decided that someone had to be that leader and why not bring The Nashville Experience to the masses and let them see what they have been missing all along.

My friends your wait is almost almost over. We are coming and we are bringing a fusion of fun and serious business because we are passionate about the good life. The things that bring us joy, put a smile on our face and yes even make us look good in front of our family, friends and peers. That is what we want to do is shine the light on the things that will make you look like a hero. A hero with all the right information to insure a grand time will be had by everyone.

We're also creating The Nashville Experience apparel and we are looking for some local businesses to be a part of this process. Let's work together and show the world the best of Nashville and show the world the best of the best city in the world. A city that is full of dreams and dreamers, a city called NASHVILLE.

~~~
What will we have on The Nashville Experience? Here is a list of some subjects that will be a part of what we show you.
