I have been asking people what place or thing do they feel people need to see to get the true feel of Nashville. I guess you could look at it like what things would be in our trophy case? Well, here are two gentleman who shared their top 5 with us.
Nelson
Opryland Hotel
Parthenon & Centennial Park
Cheekwood Botanical Gardens
Grassmere Zoo
The Hermitage
Zach
Parthenon
Fisk University
Belle Meade Plantation
Country Music Hall of Fame
The Hermitage Hotel
The Gaylord Opryland Hotel is an amazing place that I think everyone should visit at least once. It is huge with three indoor gardens that total 9 acres, more then 2,800 rooms, a spa, restaurants, bars and clubs and shops of all kinds.
I feel like when you go in to have a look around you must keep the heart of a child during the time of your visit. I say that because when walking around gardens, walking under waterfalls, amongst the trees and flowers it is very easy to imagine a fairy riding on a leaf in the fountain, as if it were a boat. It makes you want to sit on a bench with that special someone and soak up all the joy, smiles and delight that being in a magical place brings. Holding hands seems like the only thing to do and not to just walk from place to place and ignore all the incredible surroundings.
Those are some of the reasons that I love this hotel and feel like everyone should visit at least once. I say that because of having my own heart swept away there as the magic of the place and two people walking through garden after garden caused our hearts to melt and become one.
The hotel has a large convention within the hotel and they bring many conventions to our city and those people often get out to see the city. So the hotel is an attraction that helps the local economy but also many of the people who stay there get out and about in Nashville so they aren't bringing their money solely to Opryland.
Some of the rooms are absolutely mind blowing in sheer size, opulence and style but many of the rooms are pretty basic and they still like to charge a very pretty penny for them. To many of the rooms are just not worth the price that they have on them and I would recommend staying at a smaller hotel that is more in tune with the guests and take the time to visit the Opryland Hotel on your own time. Another thing that I don't really care for is the way they charge so much for self and valet parking, so to get around that park over at the Opry Mills mall and walk over to the Delta entrance of the hotel.
I do think you should give them a try at least once. It is a fun place to stay at for a night or two but it can be just to much for many people because of it's size and all. My recommendation is to stay somewhere else after you have spent a night or two there. It is truly a wonderful experience but you can save money and still enjoy the gardens, restaurants, bars and shopping without the big prices or the hassle of trying to find your room.
So yes, I love this hotel and company but it isn't the only place in Nashville so do some research and find out what fits you best when you visit Nashville. Some things aren't perfect but a perfect part of a city and that is the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. It is a place that you have to see and experience for yourself.
To answer the question that is the headline, "yes it is worth the hype," overall.

What to do when you are visiting Nashville and you have kids? Well, you can't really take them honky-tonkin', clubbing or do anything to wild and crazy but there are still plenty of things to do and enjoy in Nashville without having to cover the eyes and ears of your children.
Why not take them to any of the places listed below and I promise that both the parents and the children will have a wonderful time. See you out and about in Nashville.

I know everyone thinks Nashville is nothing but music, boots, horses and people line dancing or playing music and that is so true but there is also so much more then that. Bring your family to Nashville and have a wonderful time and enjoy the warm Southern hospitality that we are famous for.
Please feel free to contact the folks here at Webbspun Ideas and The Nashville Experience with Corey Webb for more info or if we can answer any questions for you.
I posted this question a few days ago to see what some of the local Nashvillians would say and what they believe gives people a good idea of the top 5 places or things to visit in Nashville.
Here are some responses...

Jan - my choices (for visitors) would be - Ryman Auditorium, State Capitol, Lower Broad, Country Music Hall of Fame and the Opryland Hotel. Great question!
Rebecca Michelle - Centennial Park, Gaylord Opryland Hotel, 2nd Ave/Broadway, all the country music attractions, and The Hermitage.
I'm going to visit Macke's Green Hills restaurant soon to meet chef Toby Willis and try some of their delicious food. Visiting a new (for me) restaurant is always a great pleasure especially when they have a chef that enjoys what he does and believes in creating an experience not just a meal.
I love what he did with a couple of desserts that are fun and a bit adventurous. He did his own version of a Moon Pie which was served with a milk gelato and an ice-cold shot of RC Cola or the apple fritter bread pudding (fritters from the Donut Den) with a cider sorbet & buttermilk creme Anglaise.
Now to visit a place like this I need to find someone who enjoys the adventure of tasting whatever the chef suggests and letting your tastebuds be tantalized with the pleasure of great food.
I think the person I take should give me their best "Nashville Experience" from a locally owned restaurant. I look forward to reading your stories and visiting Macke's.
Visit their website to learn more about them and to have a look at the menu. http://www.mackesgreenhills.com/
